What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a public school but it is an independent public school -- one that is free from some of the regulations that may stand in the way of achieving educational excellence. A charter school is held accountable for how well it educates its children. It operates under a mandate for high standards and it must deliver. The Lucas County Educational Service Center and Ohio State Board of Education both closely monitor and approve Horizon Science Academy's program.
Who can attend HSA?
Any child who resides within the boundaries of Ohio may apply to enroll in HSA. HSA is a school of choice and has no neighborhood restrictions.
Is there tuition charged at HSA?
No. HSA is a public school that charges no tuition for 9th through 12th grade.
How do you get into HSA? Are there entry requirements or exams?
Enrollment is open to all children regardless of ability, race, creed, color, gender, national origin, ancestry, or need for special services. However, HSA has a sibling preference policy. Siblings of the current students at HSA are automatically accepted. .
How is HSA governed and financed?
HSA a not-for-profit organization that has its own Board of Directors. HSA is funded by the State of Ohio. There is additional federal and state funding available to charter schools too. Besides such funding, HSA seeks federal and private grants and receive individual donations, which is tax deductible.
Does HSA provide transportation?
No. Horizon Science Academy does not provide transportation, but resident districts often have alleviation programs (such as reimbursement or public bus ticket programs) for parents.

Do students pay any fee at HSA?
Yes they do. There is a $250.00 non-consumable material fee for 2009-2010 school year. This fee is due upon acceptance.
Does HSA serve students with learning disabilities?
Yes, HSA serves students with learning disabilities. Please consult the school for specific questions.
Does HSA have a management organization?
HSA partners with Concept Schools, Inc. which provides instructional and strategic support to HSA. Concept Schools has charter schools in Ohio and Illinois that are very successful. HSA has been modeled after these schools in Ohio.
